On Day 2 of the Charlie Hebdo discussion, we focused on American humor. I was very intrigued to see students' responses at the end of the lesson. Some classes had a more heated discussion than others. Here is a collection of one class's exit slips on the difference between free speech and hate speech.
The freedom of speech is the ability to say whatever you want without legal repercussions and without the fear of bodily harm or death. Hate speech is when you speak out of hate. However they do overlap whether you like it or not. Hate speech is legal. People shouldn't say whatever they want. They should be able to say whatever you want.
To be perfectly honest, hate speech is still exercising freedom of speech and to determine whether or not it should be out there, but we have our rights so we have to teach the press how to behave and we have to teach the people how to behave and then trust them to do the right thing.
Freedom of speech is having the right to voice your opinion. Hate speech is insulting someone because of prejudice.
Freedom - saying anything you want nicely. Hate speech - saying anything you want hatefully.
The difference between freedom of speech and hate speech is that to me freedom of speech is offering opinions and hate speech is just saying things negative and not giving opinions at all but just being straight up mean.
There isn't really a difference between freedom of speech and hate speech. People have freedom of speech. They just choose whether it's hate speech or not.
The difference is that freedom of speech has over hate speech is that when you hate something you say mean and hurtful things to make yourself feel better.
The difference from freedom of speech and hate speech is with freedom of speech you are able to say what's on your mind and not get persecuted because of it. With hate speech, you are purposefully trying to make someone ea victim of your words.
Freedom of speech is saying whatever you want but hate speech is targeting something or someone out of hate.
Freedom of speech has limitations. Hate speech specifically targets someone because of what they believe in.
Freedom of speech is saying whatever is on your mind and hate speech is constantly saying negative things intentionally.
Hate speech is a form of freedom of speech, but in a corrupted manor.
Freedom of speech is saying whatever is on your mind and hate speech is saying something bad when you're angry at someone.
Freedom is saying whatever you want. You're voicing your own opinion. Hate speech is directly pointed toward somebody. They hate on that person. That's not what freedom of speech is for.
Freedom of speech is peacefully expressing your opinion. Hate speech is expressing your opinion violently.
Freedom of speech is when you can say things without being afraid of anyone to hate or arrest you, maybe even attack! Hate speech is when people do not want you to say something they don't like.
There is a thin line between freedom of speech and hate speech and it's often blurred. I honestly can't really tell the difference anymore.
I am so thankful for a day where I can just ingest my students' thoughts on life and hear their perspective of things. May this school and this classroom be one where we can discuss real, relevant events in a way that is received well.
